Our Spoons Came From Woolworths by Barbara Comyns

spoonsThis novel, set in 1930’s London deals with the harsh realities of motherhood lightly drawn in sharply amusing detail: the hospital birth most definitely NOT from your dreams and a father following closely behind in the not -what -you- imagined fatherhood stakes. (He cannot understand see why a baby can’t be kept in a cupboard or a cardboard box!) Set in a time when your future was sharply defined by motherhood; give up work, be the sole homemaker and accept that any other ambition will be very hard to achieve, the heroine,Sophia, is one of life’s survivors – Keen and forward looking, spirited, brave and optimistic, she manages to resurface from every problem and setback, keeps on maintaining and supporting her family and never loses sight of this as a worthwhile goal in itself. We really love the cover design too.
